How to concert FLAC and SHN files to MP3
by: dave

Note: I decided to put this "tutorial" up on IceMelon (felt it would be more appropriate there). So, if there's ever an update to this, the one up on IceMelon will be the one updated.

Disclaimer: FLAC and SHN are lossless audio files. If you convert them to mp3s, you will be losing quality. With that said, if you're cheapskate (like myself) with a small 30 GB laptop hard drive, let's move on.

First step is to download a converter. I recommend dBpowerAMP. It's very good and it's free...

— except after 30 days, your mp3 codec license expires and you will need to pay $13 for it. Don't worry, that's only for the current version of dBpowerAMP. You can get an older version of the software here, which includes the mp3 codec (for free).

The reason they started charging money for the mp3 codec is because the mp3 patent holders started charging them money. If you're bored, more about it here:

Anyway, once you download dBpowerAMP, you will need to download the additional SHN and FLAC plugins to convert those files to mp3. You can get them here:
- http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-flac.htm

If want to retain your files in their original formats, but can't get them to play, it may be because you don't have their respective codecs. You can download them here (these are what I used for winamp):
- FLAC codec/plugin for winamp
- SHN codec/plugin for winamp

So, once you have everything downloaded and properly installed, just run dBpowerAMP. Using it is a cinch.
